Lighthouse preservation grants have been awarded.

The Michigan State Historic Preservation Office awarded the city of Grand Haven and the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association (SPLKA) Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program (MLAP) funding (SHPO). The program's funding comes from the sale of special Save Our Lights license plates.

MLAP awarded Grand Haven a $60,000 grant, which the SHPO matched with a $76,409 donation.

“The grant from the MLAP will supplement funds raised locally and are the next step in a multi-year approach to complete preservation and, soon, opening the lights regularly to public enjoyment,” said Grand Haven City Manager Pat McGinnis. The funding will assist repair the outside concrete wall and deck surfaces, restore the exterior concrete steps, fix the concrete curb, install new metal flashing, and painting.

The Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association of Ludington is slated to receive $40,000 of the $100,000 funds from the MLAP. A historic buildings study for the Big Sable Point Light Station is scheduled to be completed, along with a $20,000 match.

The study will include historical information on the lighthouse as well as documentation of current problems to aid in the development of management goals and repair priorities.

“The Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association is so pleased to receive this MLAP grant to help us achieve a major strategic goal of funding a Historic Structure Report for the Big Sable Point Lighthouse," said Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association Executive Director Peter Manting.

Save Our Lights

The Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program strives to assist in the restoration and maintenance of historic lighthouses around the state. The initiative is funded through the Michigan Secretary of State's sale of Save Our Lights license plates. To be eligible for an MLAP award, applicants must have matching funds equal to at least 50% of the MLAP grant amount.

There are about 120 lighthouses in Michigan. Many are available to the public for visits, while others house bed-and-breakfast inns or museums.
